2012-02-02 - Singles In America Study By Match.com
MATCH.COM BLOG - Feb 2 - "Singles in America", Match.com's second annual study on singles, dives deep into how singles are living and thinking in 2012. ~5,K singles participated in the survey. The Singles in America study was funded by Match.com in association with biological anthropologist, Dr. Helen Fisher; sex and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman; evolutionary biologist with The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, Dr. Justin R. Garcia; and the Institute for Evolutionary Studies (EvoS) at Binghamton University. Here are just a few of the study’s most groundbreaking results: Fidelity is regarded as a more important quality in the U.S. president than in a partner. 62% of men and 80% of women say that sexual fidelity in a relationship is a “must have.” But almost 9 out of 10 respondents believe there are “no acceptable excuses” for infidelity by a political candidate (87% of men and 91% of women). Men are more willing to make a commitment without being in love or feeling sexually attracted to their partner. Singles over 60 are most likely to insist on a partnership that includes sexual attraction and romance. See full article at Match.com Blog See all posts on Match.com

2012-02-01 - Who's Telling You The Truth About Dating Algorithms?
FAST COMPANY - Jan 27 - Dr. Pepper Schwartz is the author of The Love Test, The Great Sex Weekend, Everything You Know About Love and Sex is Wrong, and more. She's a professor of sociology at the University of Washington in Seattle who mugs on behalf of PerfectMatch.com, where she co-developed The Duet® Total Compatibility System. On the final day of the iDate conference, Schwartz told the audience her system is based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Joining her was Dr. Eli Finkel who staked out his own territory as industry-scold, denouncing eHarmony. eHarmony has refused to reveal its algorithm, Finkel said, and therefore the company should not advertise a scientific approach to matching until it can show, publicly, that its system works according to the standards of scientific rigor. Today it's not the professor-backed dating sites but the ones run by math geeks that seem to be on top. Sam Yagan, a cofounder of OkCupid.com (sold to Match.com for $90M), responded to Drs. Finkel and Schwartz with an occasional eye roll. He dispatched a very brief, slide-assisted explanation of OkCupid's matching process. The users are not required to answer any questions. But the site is premised on the...

2012-02-01 - Nerve Dating Re-Launches
TECH CRUNCH - Jan 31 - In 1997, Rufus Griscom and Genevieve Field launched a website and eMag dedicated to sex, relationships, and culture called Nerve. Because Nerve already had a loyal readership and fanbase (about 2 million monthly uniques), there was a readymade audience for Nerve Dating, making it easier to reach critical mass. Today, the team is launching Nerve Dating in San Francisco, with plans to continue rolling out across the U.S. The main thrust of Nerve’s bi-costal dating service is to create a platform that “celebrates individual voices,” without the taxonomy inherent to dating websites that tends to lump people into categories so that matching technology can do the heavy lifting. Nerve is trying to make dating more like an enjoyable cocktail party, something that’s more natural and casual than an awkward blind date. Thus, on Nerve, users can actively share their thoughts and opinions about restaurants, bars, movies, music, and books, and are instantly introduced to other people who enjoy the same things. by Rip Empson See full article at Tech Crunch See all posts on Nerve Dating

2012-02-01 - White Label Dating Providers Comparison Study
OPW - Feb 1 - Back in 2007, Courtland Brooks conducted a pioneering study that set out to compare the various white label dating providers and their service offerings. The online dating industry has grown rapidly since then. The concept of niche dating has proved very attractive to webmasters and affiliates who have warmed to the idea of setting up their own dating site. But how can you compete against Match.com or eHarmony? Unless you have very deep pockets the only viable alternative is to partner with a White Label provider. Which White Label provider should you choose? To make this task easier we decided to update our initial study. Download White Label Dating Provider Comparison Study The white label operator landscape has altered considerably. In terms of new entrants, the sector has seen the arrival of Dating Factory, whose primary focus is on non-English speaking markets. Cupid PLC successfully listed on the AIM market in the UK in 2010 and has subsequently focused primarily on growing its own in-house brand dating sites (Cupid.com, BeNaughty, Flirt.com, etc.). WhiteLabelDating.com (WLD) has grown rapidly since our first study from £3M to £30M annual revenues and was voted as the Best Dating...

2012-01-30 - iDate Demonstrates Shift In Dating Technology
FAST COMPANY – Jan 26 – Author Dan Slater, who is writing a book about the online dating industry, attended the iDate Conference in Miami and took a look at the way technology is influencing the way we date online. Things are changing now that one third of America’s 90M singles date online, and it’s no longer the “unspeakable underworld” it once was. Seventeen years ago, when Gary Kremen founded Match.com, anonymity was key to success, protecting people’s privacy and allowing them to reveal their “true identity” on their own terms. In 2007, Zoosk was formed on the basis that the younger generation grew up on technology and the conventional online dating platform was of no interest to them. Zoosk “is for a social life – with dating in mind” where privacy concerns are not as rampant. New sites continue to pop up in the ever-changing industry challenge our notions of privacy and what we should expect going forward. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is right – morality may be divine, but it’s also fickle and shifts in technology make new things possible. by Dan Slater See full article at Fast Company See all posts on Zoosk See all posts on...
